STATE TESTING INFORMATION
In order to be successful on State Writing Tests students must be proficient writers in three areas:
€ They must have a well organized, thoroughly supported piece of writing
€ They must have sentence fluency; rich, precise word choices; and writing conventions
€ They must include voice
Teach the Traits of Effective Writing is a K-12, research based program that addresses all three areas in a simple 
format beneficial to all ability levels. Even the weakest writers will find success.
Teach the Traits of Effective Wriiting teaches all students how to write. As students experience success, 
their self esteem increases.
Objective 1 
Teach the Traits of Effective Writing addresses sentence fluency and the use of precise, 
rich vocabulary. Using a teacher-made handbook and the techniques and strategies in the Teach the 
Traits manual, students master sentence variation and careful word choice.
Objective 2- a well organized, thoroughly supported piece of writing
Teach the Traits of Effective Writing's numerical approach enables all kids to be successful.
Power Writing 1, main idea,
Power Writing 2s,  main supporting ideas,
Power Writing 3s,  details, elaboration or examples 
Power Zeros  add voice and extra information
Students learn the powers, they understand the powers, and they write using the powers
With Power 1s, 2s, and 3s a student will pass the State Writing Tests.
Understanding and using the organizational structure of Power 1s, 2s, and 3s, students 
will be equipped with the thinking and writing tools needed for success on state tests.
Objective 3
The black line masters provided and the strategies described in Teach the Traits of Effective Writing 
give students techniques to use when they need to add voice to their writing .
Objective 4 - Teach the Traits of Effective Writing as a reading strategy
Because students use and thoroughly understand Teach the Traits of Effective 
Writing techniques as they write, they identify and understand the 
organizational structure of informational, expository, and narrative text.
